More than 7.000 policeman, 40 anti-riot squads, the counter-terrorism agency and the Greek Secret Service (EYP) orchestrated a gigantic operation to prevent Greek citizens from attending the military parade for the commemoration of the Greek Independence Day.
Authorities cordoned an area of several square kilometres around the parliament allowing access only to accredited journalists and pro-government demonstrators. Some of them admitted that they were brought into the area with buses.
In the previous national holiday, on October 28th, several thousand people attacked politicians and government officials in parades all around Greece. The former Prime Minister George Papandreou was forced to resign a few days later and he was replaced by a non- elected Banker, Loucas Papademos.
